First-Time travelers tips to enjoy Medellin

Beyond Colombia | First-Time travelers tips to enjoy Medellin

1. Safety First:

Though Medellin has taken significant steps towards improving safety, it's important to keep in mind that nowadays is more popular than ever, and you may find iconic, picturesque places, which attract hustlers and pickpockets, as it usually happens in other big cities.

What’s the best way to enjoy all that there’s to see? Stay in well-known and tourist-friendly areas such as El Poblado, Laureles, or Envigado. Be cautious with your belongings, especially in crowded places, and avoid displaying expensive items. We call this “No dar papaya”, or not giving papaya.

2. Embrace the Climate:

Medellin boasts a delightful spring-like climate all year-long. Pack lightweight and breathable clothing, as well as a sweater or light jacket for cooler evenings, but even those are rare. Don't forget to bring comfortable walking shoes for exploring the city's hilly neighborhoods and parks. Remember there are many things to do in Medellin, such as going to Arvi Park, el Pueblito Paisa, or Comuna 13.

If you have enough time, we also recommend going to the surrounding towns, such as Guatape or Jardin. Both have the most colorful streets, amazing landscapes, authentic Colombian food, all while in the best spring-like weather.

3. Getting Around:

Medellin has an efficient transportation system that includes the metro, cable cars, buses, and taxis. The metro is a convenient and affordable way to travel within the city while the cable cars offer breathtaking views as they transport you to higher elevations. We totally recommend taking the latter, and we assure you it is safe, perfect to enjoy the city differently.

Taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available, but it’s always better to use apps, such as Cabify or Uber to ensure the services. Or, if you are in a bar after taking our Poblado Free Tour, we’re sure you can ask for help from the bartenders to call for a ride.

4. Language Tips:

While Spanish is the official language in Colombia, you'll often find English speakers in tourist areas in Medellin. However, it's helpful to learn a few basic Spanish phrases or carry a translation app to facilitate communication. The locals appreciate the effort and will likely respond warmly.

Here are a few phrases that can help you around. Please: Por favor. When asking for the bathroom: Dónde está el baño, por favor. When asking for the bill: La cuenta, por favor. To ask for help calling a cab: Me pide un taxi, por favor. When asking for a beer: Una cerveza, por favor. Thank you: Gracias.

5. Immerse in the Local Culture:

Medellin's cultural heritage is a treasure trove waiting to be explored. Take the time to visit museums like the Museo de Antioquia, which houses an impressive collection of art, including works by Fernando Botero, some of which we’ll see during our tours.

Explore the streets of Comuna 13, adorned with vibrant street art, and ride the outdoor escalators that symbolize the neighborhood's transformation. Don't miss the opportunity to indulge in the local cuisine and experience the bustling markets, such as Mercado del Río or Mercado de San Alejo.

Medellin offers an exciting and enriching experience for first-time travelers. With the mountains, the great food, the amazing weather, and the local culture, we are sure you’ll fall in love with the city of eternal spring, and you'll create unforgettable memories.

With a well-connected transportation system and friendly locals, navigating the city and discovering its hidden gems becomes a delightful adventure. So pack your bags, don’t forget these recommendations, and get ready to explore the charm of Medellin.

Remember to plan ahead, stay informed about the latest travel advisories, and prepare for an incredible journey in Medellin.
